A hot wallet is a cryptocurrency wallet that stays connected to the internet, or to an internet-connected device, so you can quickly send, receive, and manage digital assets. In practice, a hot wallet stores and uses your private keys within an online environment, which makes everyday transactions fast and convenient.

How hot wallets work

A wallet does not “hold” coins in the way a bank account holds money. Instead, it manages private keys that authorize transactions on a blockchain. With a hot wallet, those keys are accessible through software that is online, such as a mobile app, a browser extension, a desktop app that frequently connects to the network, or a custodial wallet provided by an exchange. When you initiate a transfer, the wallet uses your private key to sign the transaction and broadcasts it to the network for confirmation.

Types, examples, and common use cases

Hot wallets are popular for day-to-day activity, such as paying for services, moving funds between platforms, interacting with DeFi apps, or minting and trading NFTs. A mobile wallet can be used to scan a QR code and pay in seconds, while a browser extension wallet can connect to decentralized applications to approve token swaps or lending transactions. Exchange wallets are also typically hot, since they must remain online to process deposits and withdrawals.

Security trade-offs and why it matters

Because hot wallets are online, they generally have a larger attack surface than cold wallets, which keep keys offline. Risks include phishing links, malicious browser extensions, malware, and compromised passwords or recovery phrases. For this reason, many users keep smaller “spending” balances in a hot wallet and store long-term holdings in more secure, offline storage. Understanding hot wallets matters because they are central to everyday crypto usage, balancing convenience with security in the broader ecosystem.
