Malware, short for “malicious software,” is any program designed to harm, disrupt, or gain unauthorized access to computers, phones, or networks. In crypto, malware often targets wallets, private keys, seed phrases, exchange logins, or even a device’s CPU and GPU power.
How malware impacts crypto users
Crypto-related malware commonly appears as “cryptojacking” software that secretly uses a victim’s computing resources to mine cryptocurrency. This can slow down laptops, overheat devices, or increase cloud and electricity costs, while the attacker collects the mining rewards. Another major category is crypto ransomware, where an attacker infiltrates a system, encrypts critical files, and demands payment in cryptocurrency to restore access.
Some malware focuses on direct theft. For example, clipboard hijackers can detect when you copy a wallet address and replace it with the attacker’s address before you paste it, causing funds to be sent to the wrong destination. Other strains are keyloggers or info stealers that capture passwords, two-factor codes, or seed phrases entered on a compromised device. More sophisticated malware can search for wallet files, browser extensions, or exchange API keys to drain accounts.
Common delivery methods and real-world context
Attackers often distribute malware through phishing emails, fake wallet apps, malicious browser extensions, “cracked” software downloads, or fraudulent customer support messages. In workplaces, a single compromised endpoint can enable wider network access, which is why crypto companies invest heavily in endpoint security, access controls, and incident response.
Malware matters in the crypto ecosystem because transactions are difficult to reverse and self-custody places security responsibility on the user. Preventing infection and protecting keys is fundamental to safeguarding funds and maintaining trust in crypto services.
