Security

In crypto, it can mean safeguarding wallets and networks from attacks, or a regulated investment instrument classified under securities laws.

In cryptocurrency, security commonly has two related meanings: the technical security that protects digital assets and data, and the legal concept of a “security” as a tradable financial instrument subject to regulation.

Security as protection of digital assets

Technical security refers to the tools and practices used to prevent unauthorized access, theft, and manipulation across wallets, exchanges, and blockchain infrastructure. Because blockchain transactions are generally irreversible, controlling private keys is central, if an attacker obtains a private key, they can move funds without permission. This is why strong key management, hardware wallets, multi-factor authentication, and careful handling of seed phrases are emphasized.
Security also applies at the network level. Blockchains use cryptography and consensus mechanisms to make it costly or impractical to alter transaction history. Even so, users can still face risks from phishing, malware, and fake wallet apps, and protocols can be exposed to smart contract bugs or exploits. A practical example is a malicious program that covertly uses someone’s computer resources for crypto mining or swaps wallet addresses during a transfer, both of which are cybersecurity problems rather than blockchain flaws.

Security as a legal classification

In finance and law, a security is a fungible, tradable instrument that represents value, such as a stock or bond. In crypto, some tokens may be treated as securities if regulators view them as investment contracts, meaning their offering, sale, and trading may need to follow securities rules. This classification can affect disclosures, who can participate in sales, and which platforms can list or broker the asset.

Why this concept matters

Security matters because crypto adoption depends on trust: users need safe custody and resilient systems, and markets need clarity on when a crypto asset is regulated like a security.
