Mining Pool

A group of crypto miners that combine hash power to find blocks more consistently and share rewards based on contributed work.

A mining pool is an arrangement where multiple cryptocurrency miners combine their computing power (hash power) to improve their odds of discovering the next block. Instead of each miner competing alone for an occasional, unpredictable payout, pool participants work together and receive smaller, more frequent rewards.

How mining pools work

In most proof-of-work networks, mining is a probabilistic race to solve a cryptographic puzzle and propose a valid block. A mining pool typically runs a coordinating server that assigns work to connected miners, tracks how much valid effort each miner contributes, and submits a completed block to the network when a solution is found. To measure contributions, pools use “shares,” which are partial proofs of work that demonstrate a miner is performing real computation even if they do not personally find the final block.
For example, a home miner with limited hardware might wait a long time to mine a block solo. By joining a Bitcoin mining pool, that miner can earn a steadier stream of smaller payouts whenever the pool finds blocks, proportional to the miner’s share of total contributed hash power.

Payout methods, benefits, and trade-offs

Pools distribute rewards using different formulas. Some methods pay only when the pool finds a block, while others smooth income further by paying based on submitted shares, sometimes with higher fees to compensate the pool for added risk. The main benefit is reduced variance, which makes mining revenue more predictable and can help miners plan for electricity and hardware costs.

The trade-off is reliance on the pool operator and their policies, fees, and uptime. Large pools can also concentrate network hash power, raising decentralization concerns if a small number of pools become too dominant.

Mining pools matter because they shape how proof-of-work mining remains economically viable for smaller participants while also influencing decentralization and security across major blockchain networks.
