Custodian

A custodian is a third-party service provider that safeguards and manages digital assets, such as cryptocurrencies, on behalf of individuals or institutions. In practice, a crypto custodian typically controls the private keys needed to move funds, and it provides the operational, security, and reporting layers clients need to store assets safely.

Crypto custody is closely tied to key management. If you control the private keys, you control the assets, so many clients outsource this responsibility to a specialized entity with dedicated security infrastructure. Custodians may offer segregated accounts, transaction approval workflows, and recordkeeping for audits and compliance. For institutional clients, custody often includes policies such as multi-person authorization, withdrawal allowlists, and detailed reporting that supports accounting and regulatory obligations.

Custody can cover more than simple storage. Depending on the provider, services may include settlement support, corporate actions for tokenized assets, staking access, or integrations with trading venues. These features are designed to reduce operational risk while enabling firms to participate in crypto markets without building a full security stack in house.

A common retail example is a custodial wallet on a centralized exchange, where the platform holds your keys and you access funds through your login. This can be convenient for trading and password recovery, but it introduces counterparty risk. If the custodian is hacked, becomes insolvent, or restricts withdrawals, users may lose access to their assets.

By contrast, self-custody uses non-custodial wallets where the user holds the keys directly. This reduces reliance on intermediaries but shifts responsibility to the owner, including backup and secure key storage.
