Ali Hosseini Khamenei (19 April 1939 – 28 February 2026) was an Iranian Shia cleric and political figure who served as the second Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Rising to the role in 1989 after the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Khamenei became one of the most influential decision-makers in Iranian statecraft, security policy, and the governance model that emerged in the years following the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
