Tokenization

The process of converting an asset or data into a blockchain-based token that represents value, ownership, or access rights.

Tokenization is the process of converting something of value into a digital token that can be created, held, and transferred on a blockchain. In crypto, a token acts as a programmable representation of an asset, a claim, or a set of rights, such as ownership, access, or revenue participation. Depending on the use case, tokenization can refer to real-world assets being represented on-chain, or to sensitive information being replaced with a token identifier for safety.

How tokenization works on a blockchain

In blockchain-based tokenization, an issuer creates tokens via a smart contract. The token supply and rules are enforced by code, and users control tokens through their wallets. A key idea is that the token stands in for something else, either an off-chain asset like a bond, a fund share, or a piece of real estate, or an on-chain right like governance voting in a protocol. The reliability of tokenization depends on the legal and operational link between the token and the underlying asset, including custody, audits, and clear redemption or settlement terms.

Common uses: real-world assets and data protection

Real-world asset tokenization aims to make traditionally illiquid or fragmented assets easier to transfer and divide. For example, a building could be represented by tokens that reflect fractional ownership, enabling broader participation and potentially faster settlement compared with legacy systems. Financial institutions also explore tokenizing deposits or securities so trading, collateral management, and corporate actions can be handled with on-chain automation.

Outside of blockchain markets, tokenization can also mean replacing sensitive data, such as payment card numbers, with non-sensitive tokens to reduce exposure in databases and payment workflows.

Tokenization matters because it can improve portability, transparency, and programmability of value, but it also introduces new requirements around compliance, trust, and the integrity of the link between tokens and what they represent.
