HODL is a cryptocurrency slang term that means holding a coin or token for the long term rather than trading in and out during market swings. The word originated as a typo of “hold” in an early Bitcoin forum post and later became backronymed as “Hold On for Dear Life,” capturing the emotional challenge of staying invested through volatility.

In crypto communities, “HODL” is both a strategy and a mindset. People may say they are “HODLing” to signal conviction that an asset’s long-term potential outweighs short-term price moves. It is commonly associated with Bitcoin, but it is also used for other cryptocurrencies, especially by investors who prefer to avoid frequent trading decisions and the stress of reacting to news cycles.

Practically, a HODL approach resembles long-term investing in traditional markets: you buy an asset, secure it, and plan to hold it across multiple market cycles. For example, a long-term Bitcoin holder might keep funds in self-custody and ignore day-to-day volatility, focusing instead on adoption, network security, and broader macro trends. Some investors combine HODLing with dollar-cost averaging, periodically buying small amounts to reduce the impact of short-term fluctuations.

That said, HODLing is not the same as guaranteed profit. Crypto assets can be highly volatile, and projects can fail due to technical flaws, poor token design, or governance issues. Risk management, custody practices, and understanding what you own still matter.
