An affiliate is a person or entity officially connected to another organization through an agreement, contract, or ownership relationship. In crypto, the term most commonly refers to affiliate marketing, where someone promotes a blockchain or cryptocurrency product and earns a commission when their referral leads to a signup, trade, or purchase.

Affiliate meaning in crypto marketing

Crypto companies such as exchanges, wallet providers, data platforms, and token projects often run affiliate programs to acquire users. An affiliate might be a content creator, educator, community admin, or website publisher who shares a unique referral link or code. If a user registers through that link and completes a qualifying action, the affiliate receives a payout, sometimes as a percentage of trading fees, a fixed bounty, or rewards paid in crypto.
Tracking is typically handled off-chain through web analytics and account attribution, although some programs also use on-chain referral systems built into smart contracts. For example, a DeFi protocol may embed a “referrer” address in a transaction so commissions can be distributed automatically.
