Walmart Pulls Advertisements from Elon Musk's Social Media Platform, X
Walmart has recently joined the group of multinational corporations like Disney and Apple who have ceased advertising on X, the social platform previously known as Twitter, now owned by Elon Musk. The company cited other platforms as more effective channels to connect with its customer base.
X's Advertising Difficulties Post Musk's Acquisition
Ever since Elon Musk's acquisition of X last year, the platform has faced challenges in retaining its advertisers. These challenges have been further fueled by Musk's endorsement of a controversial post from an X user, who baselessly accused the Jewish community of promoting hatred against the white demographic. Although Musk later apologized for his support of the defamatory post during an interview, he also lashed out at corporations that withdrew their advertisements from his platform, accusing them of blackmail.
Advertisers Frustration and User Boycotts
Ad sales representatives from X appeared frustrated, according to an anonymous source from a major ad-buying agency, in the aftermath of Musk's diatribe against the boycotting brands. In addition, the representatives have refrained from expressing their views on Musk's comments. Media Matters reported that major brands such as Apple, Walt Disney, and Warner Bros Discovery experienced their ads appear beside numerous anti-Semitic posts, which further fueled the boycott. Musk's supporters have responded by boycotting these brands in return, including cancelling their Disney+ subscriptions and other forms of protest.
