Stellar Foundation Backs Smart-Contracts Upgrade Delay Due to Bug Discovery

Stellar Blockchain Upgrade Faces Delay due to Newly Discovered Bug

A potential delay in the anticipated upgrade of the Stellar blockchain to include EthereumEthereum$2,315 -2.42%-style smart contracts has been announced. This delay comes as a result of a bug discovered, causing the developers and validators of the project to rethink the initial target date of January 30.

Bug Discovered in the Stellar Core Software

A bug in the Stellar Core v20.1.0 software was discovered on January 25 by the Stellar Development Foundation, which underpins the blockchain's ecosystem. This bug could hypothetically influence applications and services that utilize the new Soroban smart contracts transactions once the upgrade is implemented.

The Stellar Development Foundation's Response

Despite deeming the bug to present minimal risk given the phased rollout plan, the Stellar Development Foundation is reconsidering following robust feedback from the developer community. As such, the foundation is considering 'disarming' its own validators to prevent them from voting to initiate the network upgrade on January 30.

Despite this, other validators still reserve the right to proceed with the Protocol 20 upgrade. Regardless of the course of action, a solution for the bug is expected to be available in the next fortnight. If the upgrade ends up being delayed, the foundation will coordinate to set a future voting date.

Stellar Blockchain: An Old Player Bringing New Features

Originating as a fork of the Ripple protocol in 2014, Stellar is among the earliest blockchains. The project's upgrade to include the programmability associated with Ethereum and its smart contracts, might rejuvenate the project's native XLM tokens. As the upgrade looms, traders may speculate on the potential revitalizing effect it could have on the project.
