Solana's Saga Phone: A Future In Question
With disappointing sales and shifting market dynamics, the future of Solana$104 5.03%'s Saga Phone appears increasingly uncertain. This was the sentiment expressed by Solana founder, Anatoly Yakovenko, during a recent appearance on the Unchained podcast hosted by Laura Shin.
Smart Wallets: A Market Necessity?
Yakovenko indicated the necessity to determine the place of a smart wallet in the market. The potential for a more affordable version that could be utilized as a secondary device by iPhone users was discussed. However, the absence of a strong signal indicating that this will be sufficiently attractive to sell 50,000 units was noted. This magic number holds significant weight, as it is considered a measure of the phone's success.
Sales and Market Response
The phone was initially launched to the market earlier this year. By August, a substantial price cut was implemented, lowering the cost from $1000 to $599. Despite this, Yakovenko acknowledged during his interview that recent developments in mobile interfaces, specifically Progressive Web Apps and pass keys, have dramatically minimized the difference between specialized and conventional smartphones.
Progressive Web Apps: A Game Changer
Yakovenko elucidated, Progressive Web Apps bypass the App Store so developers don't need to pay the fees. They kind of have that side-loading feature even on iOS now. Crypto phones have been introduced by certain companies in the past, but success has been limited to a cult following. Companies of all sizes, from notable brands such as HTC to smaller ventures like Sirin Labs, have previously fallen short in their attempts to launch a crypto-centric smartphone.
Yakovenko's Personal Use of the Saga Phone
Interestingly, Yakovenko also revealed that he does not use his Solana Saga phone as his main device. He stated, I flip between this one and my iPhone because I've got too many business apps and stuff and connections. So it's hard for me to support all the security certificates and stuff like that are kind of hooked up to my iPhone. In his own words, the Saga phone is my NFT phone.
Solana's SOL Token Performance
The performance of Solana's SOL token has soared, with a year-to-date increase of over 500%, as per on-chain data.
