Dog-Themed Meme Token Drives Resurgence in Solana's Saga Phone
A dog-inspired meme token might have renewed interest in the sales of Solana$104 5.03%'s Saga smartphone, with some units now fetching upwards of $5,000. This is a stark contrast to the initial perception of the phone as a failed product by its creators.
Resale of Saga Phones on eBay
A number of Saga phones have been successfully sold on the online marketplace eBay for a minimum of $2,000 each. The majority of these phones are categorized as sealed and unopened, with the predominant sellers originating from the United States. The highest price fetched by a Saga phone was reported at $5,000.
30 Million BONK Token Airdrop
There was a noticeable increase in sales of the Solana Saga phones last week. The surge seems to have been motivated by some arbitrage traders aiming to benefit from the 30 million BONK token airdrop that each phone owner received. At its peak last week, the airdrop was valued at over $700, a significant gain for a device retailing at $599.
Popularity of the BONK Token
During the month of November, the dog-themed BONK token quickly gained traction among blockchain users, leading to an impressive rise of as much as 110% within a single 24-hour period, and extending 30-day gains to over 700%. This sudden popularity of BONK token appears to have indirectly boosted the fortunes of the Saga phone, which had previously suffered from poor sales and uncertainty about its future prospects.
Comments by Solana's Founders
Solana's founder, Anatoly Yakovenko, had previously expressed uncertainty about the phone's ability to sell 50,000 units. In his words, I think 25,000 to 50,000 units to feel like there is a hardcore user base for developers to be compelled to ship applications. The Saga phone was initially released earlier this year, and in August, its price was reduced from $1,000 to $599.
Saga Phones Sold Out in U.S. and EU
After the recent surge in interest, the Saga phone has now sold out in both the U.S. and the European Union, according to a post by Solana's co-founder Raj Gokal.
