FTX Founder Sam Bankman-Fried Adjusts to Prison Life
Following bankruptcy of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX$3.28 -5.38%, founder Sam Bankman-Fried is coming to terms with the new reality of life behind bars. According to a Wall Street Journal report, mackerel has emerged as a new form of currency within the prison, replacing the previously prevalent practice of trading cigarettes.
Mackerel: The New Cigarette Behind Bars
With the ban on smoking inside the prison, the tradition of trading goods and services in exchange for cigarettes has been replaced by the bartering of preserved fish. It is reported that Bankman-Fried has already made some transactions with these so called 'macks', trading them for a haircut.
Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center: Bankman-Fried's New Home
Bankman-Fried is currently residing in the Metropolitan Detention Center located in Brooklyn. He is awaiting sentencing for seven counts of defrauding his customers and lenders during his tenure as CEO of FTX. His fellow inmates include notable figures such as a former Honduran president and a one-time senior Mexican police officer.
Legal Access and Visitation
Bankman-Fried has been granted the use of a specialized laptop to access legal materials. Additionally, he is permitted visits from non-attorneys once a week. It is also reported that he has been sharing cryptocurrency advice with the prison guards.
