Pakistan Submits an Application to Join BRICS Alliance
Pakistan has officially submitted its application and is aiming to become a part of the BRICS alliance in 2024. BRICS has extended its invitation to a total of six countries, which includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Argentina, Egypt, Iran, and Ethiopia. From these six, Argentina might be the only one to decline the BRICS offer. We explore the reasons for Argentina's disinterest in this alliance.
Seeking Russia's Support for BRICS Membership
Pakistan is currently pursuing support from Russia for their induction into the BRICS alliance. The country is hoping that Russia will expedite the membership process with the assistance of Pakistan's newly appointed Ambassador to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamali.
Pakistan's Formal Application and Hope for 2024 Induction
Ambassador Jamali has confirmed that Pakistan has officially applied to join the BRICS alliance and aspires to become part of this bloc in 2024. A key part of their strategy is seeking assistance from Russia for this induction, with the hope of joining the group during Putin's presidency. The ambassador has been quoted as saying, "Pakistan would like to be part of this important organization and we are in the process of contacting member countries for extending support to Pakistan's membership in general and the Russian Federation in particular."
Uncertainty Over Alliance Members' Support
However, there is no certainty regarding the support from other alliance countries for Pakistan's induction in the group. More specifically, India, a strong contender to Pakistan, could potentially oppose such a move.
Statements from Russian and Chinese Representatives
Additionally, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov expressed in October that they would like to introduce a "circle of BRICS friends." Simultaneously, China also emphasized their wish to induct "like-minded partners" into the alliance.
China Advocates Expansion of the Alliance
The Communist nation added that they are an "open and inclusive" alliance and desire to enhance the group. China is considering the addition of more countries to initiate a de-dollarization initiative. However, it appears that Pakistan's entry into BRICS could be challenging due to potential opposition from India.
