opBNB's Roadmap Promises Enhanced Performance for Layer-2 Blockchain
The opBNB roadmap has laid out a path for improved performance for the layer-2 blockchain developed by BNB$312 -5.65% Chain. It's noteworthy that opBNB's transaction count passed the significant milestone of 20 million just last week.
Doubling Speed and Reducing Network Fees
BNB Chain's developers have ambitious goals to more than double the transaction speed and drastically reduce network fees by 90% as part of a new technical roadmap for the layer-2 network, opBNB. This plan is set to increase processing speed to 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) from the current 4,000 and reduce the cost to a mere $0.0005 within a six month timeframe. The initial fee cut, to $0.001 from $0.005, is slated for December 4.
opBNB Network and OP Stack
The network operates on Optimism$3.67 -1.41%'s OP Stack. If this targeted speed is achieved, it would position opBNB among the fastest layer-2 networks, rivalling the popular Arbitrum, which boasts a claimed 40,000 TPS. A layer 2 network is an off-chain system built over a base, or layer-1, blockchain. The OP Stack is the software suite that enables Optimism, an Ethereum$2,315 -2.42% layer-2 blockchain, which developers can utilize to build their unique networks.
Growth and Future Plans
Since its inception in September, the number of users on opBNB has been steadily climbing. Transactions peaked at a record 5.4 million last week, culminating in lifetime transactions of over 20 million. The network has recorded a peak of 645 minting transactions per second.
Developers forecast that opBNB's gas limit per block will double to 200 million per second. The gas limit is the highest price a user is prepared to pay when sending a transaction. Higher limits can enhance transactional processing speed during periods of high demand.
Planned Upgrades for opBNB
The proposed upgrades to be implemented over the next year are designed to equip opBNB to support on-chain games and high-frequency decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.
