Netflix Resumes Ad Campaign on X Platform, Following Temporary Boycott
Despite a prior pause in advertisement due to controversial remarks made by Elon Musk, Netflix has resumed advertising on the X platform, previously known as Twitter.
Background of the Boycott
The large-scale boycott was triggered by a contentious post that Musk, the proprietor of the platform, supported, which was seen to commend an antisemitic conspiracy theory. This led many to perceive Musk's viral post as anti-Semitic, subsequently prompting tech giants to take action.
Musk's Controversial Response
In November, Musk responded to a post suggesting that Jewish communities support "dialectical hatred against whites". He specifically asserted that the post spoke the actual truth.
Impact and Response
As reported by The New York Times, Netflix put a pause on nearly $3 million worth of advertising, using X's estimates as a reference. This move aligned them with Disney, Apple, IBM, and other multi-billion dollar companies that also withdrew their adverts from X.
Musk Denies Allegations
Musk, who also holds the position of CEO at Tesla and SpaceX, has refuted claims of antisemitism. He clarified on X that "Clear calls for extreme violence are against our terms of service and will result in suspension."
Netflix Ads Reappear on X Platform
The advertising campaign of Netflix has made its return on the X platform. However, advertisements from Walmart, Disney, and other companies partaking in the boycott are yet to reappear.
