Lugano, Switzerland Incorporates Polygon into Municipal Crypto Payment App
The Swiss city of Lugano has broadened its cryptocurrency adoption through the integration of Polygon$0.967 -3.65% into its municipal crypto payment app, MyLugano. This was according to an announcement made by Polygon Labs on November 22. The recent update to the MyLugano app now supports multi-chain digital wallets. Even though multiple tokens have been included, there is a roadmap for additional cryptocurrency integration in the future.
Prior Use of Ethereum
Previously, Lugano utilized Ethereum$2,315 -2.42%'s scaling platform for the city's LVGA stablecoin infrastructure. As a municipal partner of Polygon since at least 2022, the recent adoption further highlights Lugano's drive to establish itself as a world-class blockchain center.
MyLugano's New Non-Fungible Token Collection
Alongside the digital wallet upgrade, MyLugano is also introducing a new non-fungible token (NFT) collection. The collection is inspired by art displayed prominently throughout the city. The NFTs portray a large 40-meter mural by local artist Yuri Catania and will be minted on Polygon's network.
Engagement with MyLugano and Future Ambitions
The app, MyLugano, launched in 2021 in partnership with Tether$1.000 -0.12%'s stablecoin, has approximately 30,000 regular users. It allows residents of Switzerland's third-largest city to conduct transactions and pay businesses using cryptocurrency. Almost half of the city's residents have adopted MyLugano for crypto payments, thus making Lugano a live case study for decentralized technology integration. The city's leadership aims to continue pursuing ambitious blockchain infrastructure projects in a bid to solidify Lugano's reputation as an emerging European blockchain hub.
