Comedian Larry David's Regret Over FTX Super Bowl Ad
Renowned comedian Larry David recently discussed his controversial Super Bowl commercial for FTX$3.28 -5.38%, Sam Bankman-Fried's cryptocurrency exchange, which collapsed only months following the ad's debut. David had sought advice from knowledgeable friends about taking part in the advertisement, who assured him that the venture was legitimate. Unfortunately, David's involvement turned out to be a regrettable decision.
Controversial FTX Commercial
In the infamous ad, David is shown belittling various historical innovations. Starting from the invention of the wheel, to a fork, toilet, and coffee. The commercial concludes with a mention of Bankman-Fried's crypto exchange. An actor within the commercial describes FTX as a safe and easy way to get into crypto, to which David nonchalantly responds: Eh, I don't think so, and I'm never wrong about this stuff. Never. The ad ends with the text, DON'T BE LIKE LARRY, flashed up on the screen.
Unfortunate Aftermath
It appears that David's skeptical character in the commercial was indeed onto something. FTX experienced a shocking downfall only months later. Its founder, Bankman-Fried, was found guilty in November 2023 of plundering billions of dollars from customers.
FTX's Collapse
As FTX was crumbling in November 2022, the majority of its users found themselves unable to withdraw their funds. The company's bankruptcy filing, submitted a mere nine days after its collapse, led to an additional freeze on funds.
Repayment of Customers
Despite the turmoil, it was recently announced that the FTX bankruptcy estate expects to fully repay its customers. However, David's personal financial losses remain uncertain, as he admitted that he had received a significant portion of his payment for the commercial in crypto.
