Zero-Knowledge Rollups: A Blockchain Trend Revamping Transactions
Zero-knowledge rollups have emerged as one of the most momentous blockchain trends this year. The cryptographic technique has been at the forefront of making blockchain transactions more affordable and faster. Numerous Layer-2 teams have engaged in a competitive rush to develop their own chains, leveraging this technology that hinges on zero-knowledge proofs - a proof mechanism that requires just a fragment of information to establish validity.
Polygon's Role in Leveraging Zero-Knowledge Rollups
Polygon$0.967 -3.65%, a scaling solution for Ethereum$2,315 -2.42%, stands as a trailblazer in this sphere. In the past year, Jordi Baylina, the technical lead at Polygon, has spearheaded the launch of its zkEVM, a zero-knowledge rollup that's compatible with Ethereum smart contracts. Polygon's zkEVM was inaugurated in March, with Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's co-founder, executing the initial transaction.
Jordi Baylina's Contributions
Baylina, a seasoned player in the industry, is the brain behind the white hat group that successfully recovered funds from the Ethereum DAO hack in 2016. He also established the Hermez network, a zero-knowledge rollup, which Polygon acquired in 2021.
Polygon's zkEVM Initiative and Future Plans
On the acquisition of Hermez, Baylina stated that Polygon showed a staunch conviction in scaling and in the ZK tech. After his integration into Polygon, Baylina focused his energies on making the zkEVM a reality. Despite his pride in the successful launch of Polygon's zkEVM, Baylina acknowledges that the team achieved several milestones in 2023 in the quest to evolve into a comprehensive zero-knowledge network. The recent Polygon 2.0 roadmap, which lays out its scaling strategy, as well as the inauguration of its customizable Chain Development Kit (CDK), were among the significant events for the team this year.
The Future of Polygon
Baylina envisages that 2024 will witness even more significant developments for Polygon. He predicts that 2024 will be the year of explosion for the Polygon 2.0 network and the zk rollups.
