China Discusses Potential Impact of Argentina's Rejection of BRICS Invitation

China has responded to the implications of possible refusal of BRICS alliance invitation by Argentina, amid a shift in political leadership within the country that does not conform with BRICS' objectives. Mao Ning, the foreign ministry spokesperson for China, has been in dialogue about speculations of Javier Milei, the newly elected president, declining the consortium's invite.

Milei has openly expressed his intent to adopt the US dollar as Argentina's primary currency and decrease connections with BRICS countries. Consequently, there is a probable scenario where he might reject an invitation. As his presidency is now confirmed, BRICS must wait for his response.

In 2023, the BRICS annual gathering captured global attention with its announcement of a plan to expand its membership by six countries. The group extended its invitation to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Argentina. However, Argentina might turn down this invitation due to a fresh direction charted by its new president.

Milei, known for his radical economic ideologies, has openly discussed his plans for the US dollar. Alongside his remarks about BRICS, China has also commented on Argentina's likely refusal of its invite. These comments surfaced after reports from Russia suggested that the South American country has already finalized its decision to decline.

I would like to emphasize that the BRICS cooperation mechanism is a significant platform for burgeoning markets and developing countries to fortify solidarity and cooperation and protect mutual interests, stated Mao Ning. He also described BRICS as an open platform for interested nations. Reuters reported that any country showing interest has potential access to the bloc.

China Supports Future Expansion Despite Potential Rejection

Overall, China seems to endorse future growth, placing emphasis on the fact that these endeavors are set to continue shortly. Therefore, even if Argentina chooses to decline its invitation, it would not hinder future endeavors. Consequently, it appears that the growth of the bloc remains a high priority.
