Michael Kutsche on his Artistic Journey and NFT Creation

Kutsche recollects his journey as a successful character designer in the film industry and his unending passion for fine art. Despite numerous invitations to exhibit his work, he consciously chose to maintain focus on his career as a character designer. The artistic freedom expressed in his personal work of oil paintings and drawings served as an essential relief. The emergence of NFTs has been transformative for Kutsche, a digital artist for over 20 years, enabling him to use a unique blend of digital painting, 3-D animation, and performance capture. Although he is open to the idea of creating physical paintings, he finds himself more intrigued by the opportunities presented by digital art, which he refers to as art at the cutting edge of technology.

Creating the Most Influential 2023 Image: An Artistic Approach

While conceptually crafting the image, Kutsche was keen on creating a piece that was centered around Ellison's narrative, but still stood as an independent piece of art. His creative process involved an intuitive mode which he says is used when creating art, as opposed to the more problem-solving approach used in character design. The final piece is a compelling juxtaposition of abstraction and figuration, depicting a digital limbo.

Highlighting Aspects of Caroline Ellison's Profile

Kutsche was particularly drawn to Ellison's assertion that Bankman-Fried had corrupted her values. Despite being in a position of power as the CEO of Alameda Research, and having a distinguished academic record, Ellison felt that her ethical principles had been compromised. Prompted by this piece of her story, Kutsche transformed her head into a metaphorical jacuzzi, a comfortable abode for Bankman-Fried. The artwork's title humorously references the Effective Altruism movement, of which both Ellison and Bankman-Fried were members.

Influential NFT Artists and Disruptive NFT Projects

Kutsche identifies Joe Pease, Jake Fried, and Per Kristian Stoveland as some of the most influential artists in the NFT realm. He is also a fan of Beeple's everyday art pieces and video sculptures. Kutsche considers Opepen by Jack Butcher as one of the most disruptive NFT projects in history. The project Goblintown.wtf was a close contender.

Defining Style and Future of NFT Art

When asked to encapsulate his artistic style in three words, Kutsche refers to a categorization of his work by curator Snejana Krasteva as Cybernetic Existentialism. Referring to the volatile NFT market over the past 18 months, Kutsche believes that digital art will continue to gain popularity and importance. He asserts that the journey toward mainstream adoption might be long and winding, but it is an irreversible trend.
