Argentina Declines BRICS Alliance: Sees 'No Benefit' in Joining

Argentina Declines BRICS Expansion Invitation

Argentina, originally considered a vital member of the BRICS expansion plan, has recently expressed its disinterest in joining the alliance. This sentiment has been reported as the official position of the government on the possibility of Argentina's inclusion in this economic bloc. The development comes in the wake of the country's new administration's comments on the invitation extended during the Alliances 2023 summit.

Dispute Over BRICS Membership

The newly elected president of Argentina, Javier Milei, did not hold back in expressing his stance concerning China. Furthermore, his remarks about the potential dollarization of Argentina's economy highlight a widening chasm between the country's ambitions and the focus of the BRICS bloc.

Is BRICS Expansion Beneficial?

For a significant part of the past year, the BRICS economic alliance has experienced enormous growth. The alliance's de-dollarization initiatives have gained international recognition and brought increased geopolitical prominence. As a result, the bloc aspired to use this as a means to expand its membership, a decision made official at its 2023 summit.

However, Argentina, one of the original six expansion nations, has not only declined the invite but also critiqued the value of such an invitation. They have publicly stated that joining the alliance offers no benefit. This sentiment comes directly from the country's incoming administration.

Argentina's Justifications for Refusing BRICS Membership

The newly appointed foreign minister by President Milei, Diana Mondino, officially declined the BRICS invitation. Making her stance clear, she stressed that Argentina will not join BRICS. Furthermore, Mondino declared that the acceptance procedure into BRICS was never officially approved, despite initiation earlier this year.

In addition, Mondino did not identify any advantages of joining the economic alliance. Argentina's decision underscores the evolving international perception of the BRICS bloc. Notably, countries such as Nigeria and Pakistan have shown interest in filling the spot left vacant by Argentina.
