20 New Countries Show Interest in Joining the BRICS Alliance
In a bid to expand its influence, the BRICS bloc declared in 2024 that 20 new countries have shown interest in joining the alliance. Anil Sooklal, the bloc's Ambassador, highlighted this surge in interest from nations worldwide.
BRICS Expansion Efforts
The BRICS alliance extended its invitation to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt, Ethiopia, Argentina, and Iran in the year 2023. However, Argentina declined the offer following the election of Javier Milei as President. Interestingly, among the 20 countries showing interest in joining the alliance in the next expansion phase are Nigeria and Pakistan.
BRICS Economic Alliance Continues to Grow
The BRICS economic alliance has experienced significant growth over the past few months. The bloc has not only expanded its membership by six nations but has also considerably increased its global influence. Its de-dollarization initiatives have achieved impressive strides, reinforcing its pursuit of multipolarity.
New Applications to Join BRICS
Subsequent to the developments at the 2023 annual summit, the BRICS alliance has received applications from 20 new countries seeking to join the group in 2024. According to Anil Sooklal, over 20 countries have formally applied to join BRICS, while an equal number have shown preliminary interest.
Affirmation of BRICS' Role
This trend serves as an affirmation of the critical role BRICS plays in advocating for emerging and developing economies, stated Sooklal. He added that a large number of interested nations would be handled by the respective foreign ministers. However, he did not provide specific details about the countries that have expressed interest.
Potential New BRICS Members
Among the 20 countries that have shown interest in the alliance are Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Cuba, Ecuador, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sudan, Venezuela, Uruguay, and Thailand. Noticeably, Nigeria and Pakistan have previously expressed their desire to join the alliance in the near future.
